Octopus Energy Heat Pumps Review: Who They Are, Who They Suit

An independent look at Octopus Energy's heat pump business — energy supply, manufacturing, installation and servicing all under one roof — and how that differs from getting neutral advice.

Octopus Energy is one of Great Britain's largest domestic energy suppliers, and by its own account it is also the country's busiest heat pump installer. It generates and supplies electricity and gas, designs and sells its own branded heat pump, and installs and services that heat pump through its own engineers and a network of partner installers. Few companies in this market are as vertically integrated as Octopus.

Independent, unaffiliated review

Heat Pump Saver has no commercial relationship with Octopus Energy. We are not affiliated with it, we receive no payment, commission or referral fee from it, and nothing on this page has been supplied or approved by Octopus Energy. This is our own analysis of its public business model, not a rating, a score or a recommendation. Before choosing any installer — Octopus Energy included — get more than one quote.

What Octopus Energy is

Octopus Energy supplies gas and electricity to millions of UK households. In heating, its ambitions go further than most suppliers': alongside working with other manufacturers' equipment, it designs and sells its own branded air source heat pump, and installs it directly through in-house engineers in the areas it covers itself. Where it can't deliver an install directly, it also runs a partner programme that refers customers to local installers vetted to Octopus's own standard — installers who can, in turn, refer their own customers onto an Octopus energy tariff. Either way, the installation business and the energy-supply business sit inside the same group.

The structural point

That combination matters because the person surveying your home, sizing your heat pump and quoting the job also has a commercial interest in which electricity tariff you end up on afterwards, and in keeping you as an Octopus customer. That doesn't make the recommendation wrong — a heat pump paired with a well-matched electricity tariff can be a genuinely good outcome. The question worth asking is whether that pairing was chosen because it suited your home, or because it suited Octopus's wider business. With a single company doing both jobs, you have no easy way to tell from the outside.

Genuine strengths of this model

  • Single point of contact. Design, installation, servicing and — usually — energy supply all come from one company, rather than an installer, a manufacturer's warranty desk and a separate supplier you have to coordinate between.
  • Its own hardware. Because Octopus sells equipment it designed, technical support and parts aren't filtered through a third-party manufacturer's UK distributor.
  • Smart-tariff integration. Octopus's own smart platform can optimise when the heat pump runs against time-of-use electricity pricing, which is a real benefit for homeowners who want that level of automation.
  • National scale. A large, standardised operation, rather than the wide variability you get shopping between hundreds of small independent installers.

Where the conflict shows up in practice

The risk with any vertically integrated seller isn't usually that they lie to you — it's that the range of options they show you narrows to what they sell. An installer that fits its own branded heat pump is not going to recommend a competitor's unit, even where it might suit an unusual property better. A supplier whose install arm benefits from customers moving onto its tariffs has a built-in reason to present that pairing as the obvious choice. You are unlikely to be shown a like-for-like comparison against a different brand, a smaller local installer's quote, or an electricity tariff from a different supplier — because making that comparison isn't Octopus's job.

Who this tends to suit

  • Existing Octopus Energy customers who are already comfortable with the company and want one bill and one point of contact.
  • Homeowners who want a heat pump tightly integrated with a smart, time-of-use electricity tariff and are happy to commit to that ecosystem.
  • People who prioritise a fast, standardised process over shopping the wider market.

Who should get more quotes first

  • Homeowners who want to compare more than one heat pump brand or sizing approach before committing.
  • Anyone who wants to keep their current energy supplier, or shop the electricity tariff market independently of the heat pump decision.
  • Properties with unusual heat-loss characteristics, where a second, independent survey is genuinely worth having.

How this differs from a neutral comparison

Heat Pump Saver doesn't sell heat pumps, install them, or supply energy. We have no stake in which brand you choose, whether you stay with your current supplier, or which installer wins the job — so there's nothing pulling our information toward one outcome. That's a different kind of usefulness to what a vertically integrated seller like Octopus offers, not simply a better or worse one: think of us as the step before you talk to any installer, not a replacement for getting a quote.

The bottom line

Octopus Energy's heat pump business is a coherent, well-resourced version of the vertically integrated model — energy supply, manufacturing, installation and smart-tariff optimisation under one roof. That's a real convenience for the right customer, particularly one already on an Octopus tariff. It is not independent advice, and it shouldn't be the only quote you get.

Whichever installer you're weighing up, check your Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility first — the £7,500 grant applies regardless of who installs your heat pump — and compare Octopus's offer against at least one independent MCS installer via our installer directory before you sign anything.
