Boxt Review: Online Heat Pump Installer — Who It Suits

An independent look at Boxt, the online-first heating retailer and installer network — how its quoting and installer-network model works, and how it differs from getting neutral advice.

Boxt is an online-first retailer of boilers, heat pumps and other home heating and renewable products, built around taking a customer from an online questionnaire to a booked installation without an in-person sales visit setting the price. It expanded from boiler installation into heat pumps as demand grew and, like Heatable, it is not an energy supplier.

Independent, unaffiliated review

Heat Pump Saver has no commercial relationship with Boxt. We are not affiliated with it, we receive no payment, commission or referral fee from it, and nothing on this page has been supplied or approved by Boxt. This is our own analysis of its public business model, not a rating, a score or a recommendation. Before choosing any installer — Boxt included — get more than one quote.

What Boxt is

You complete a set of questions about your property on Boxt's website and receive an online quote for a heat pump, sized against a defined range of equipment Boxt sells. Installation is carried out through a network of engineers working under the Boxt brand, alongside its own core installation teams — the company presents itself as coordinating installers nationally to a consistent standard, rather than employing every engineer directly in every region. Boxt states that it handles the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant application as part of the process, and has been involved in industry initiatives aimed at scaling up UK heat pump installation capacity.

The structural point

Because Boxt operates a network model, there's a second layer to consider alongside the usual seller's-shortlist issue: your online quote and your actual installation can involve two different relationships — one with Boxt as the retailer that sold and priced the job, and one with the specific installer sent to carry it out. Boxt is the party accountable for the sale and the warranty; the day-to-day standard of the physical install depends on the individual engineer or team assigned. Worth clarifying up front, rather than assuming the two are always identical.

Genuine strengths of this model

  • No tariff angle. Boxt makes its money from the sale and installation, not from switching your energy supply.
  • A fixed online quote before any home visit, which some homeowners prefer to an in-person sales appointment.
  • National reach through an installer network, which can mean shorter waits in areas where independent installers are booked up.
  • Grant handling built into the process, reducing the paperwork a homeowner has to manage directly.

Where the conflict shows up in practice

As with any single-catalogue retailer, the online tool can only quote what Boxt sells and arranges — not the full range of brands and installers on the UK market. And because the installation itself is delegated to a network engineer rather than always a direct Boxt employee, the standard of the physical work sits one step removed from the company that quoted and sold you the job. Ask specifically who is doing the install, not just who is selling it.

Who this tends to suit

  • Homeowners comfortable buying a defined heating product online and happy with a network-installer model.
  • People who want to avoid an in-home sales pitch and get a number quickly.
  • Those who prioritise a fast route from quote to a booked installation date.

Who should get more quotes first

  • Anyone who wants to compare heat pump brands outside Boxt's range.
  • Homeowners who prefer a single, named tradesperson relationship from survey through to completion.
  • People who want an independent, in-person survey before any figure is fixed.

How this differs from a neutral comparison

Heat Pump Saver doesn't sell heat pumps, run an installer network, or take a cut of any job. We have no stake in which brand, which network engineer, or which company you choose, so nothing here is shaped by what's available through us. Consider us the step before you get a quote, not a replacement for one.

The bottom line

Boxt's model brings genuine convenience — an online quote, a defined product range and a national installer network — but it introduces its own wrinkle: the company that sells and prices the job isn't always the same one physically doing the work. That's worth clarifying before you commit, alongside comparing against installers outside Boxt's network.

Check your Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility first — the £7,500 grant applies regardless of which installer you use — and compare Boxt's quote against at least one independent MCS installer via our installer directory.
